(surgery of the external ear)

Indications: Embarrassed to put hair up or back due to prominence of ears. The purpose of this surgery is to reduce the prominence of the external ear. This is achieved in either one or two ways. First is to recreate the upperfold of the ear (which was incomplete prior to birth) and second to reduce depth of the bowl of the ear. Surgery can be performed either under local anesthesia, IV sedation or general anesthesia.. Day surgery.

Procedure: Recreates the upper fold of the ear and may include removal of cartilage in order to bring the body of the ear closer to the head.

Anesthesia: local or local with oral/IV sedation, general

Note: Same Day Surgery

Side Effects: Temporary throbbing, aching, swelling, redness and numbness

Duration of Results: Usually permanent. Trauma to the ear may result in loss of the surgically created upper-fold of the ear. Repeat surgery would be necessary.
